Pigs-N-Diamonds
Working at D & K brings many rewards and
opoportunities. For instance, I hear of all the gold hotspots and
productive coin-hunting areas. Since I’m an avid dredger and coin
hunter, it’s a great spot to be in! D & K is also a logical
place to call when someone has lost something of value, whether
monitary or sentimental.
I’ve been hired many times to try to find such items.
One of the most memorable happened this last summer when an
elderly gentleman called the shop about the middle of
July. I returned his call and arranged to meet at the location of
his ring’s disappearance. I arrived on time and started gathering up
the details. It seems that ol’ George was feeding
his pigs when he felt his ring slip off his finger as
his hand brushed past a slat of wood on his feed gate. He
exclaimed,
“I know right where it is.” Right away, I knew George
was a very excitable feller since every other word was something
that, if you were a kid, would certainly win you a world class
soap-in-the-mouth treatment!

“Right in here, or here,” George screeches, over
the outburst of the pigs! A few passes of the coil of my
White’s DFX told me that it wasn’t going to be that
easy and that I was going to have to get right in there with
them! I tried the platform where he stood, the wooden trough
and then the whole pen area. Nothing! By this time, the pigs
were visibly shaken.
The combination of me swinging “that thing” at
them and ol’ George’s constant verbal abuse was just about too
much for them. George then informed me that a couple of days
before, he had shoveled the pen out and “threw it over that
fence” pointing over my shoulder. I scurried,
detector-in-hand, over the fence and out of the “pig muck”.
After about the third swing of the coil I got a solid signal.
“Nickel/Ring” at about four inches! I scraped down through the
“fertilizer” and there it was, a chomped up hunk of gold with
nine diamonds still intact. It seems that one of his pigs
chewed it up and, judging by every nook and cranny, swallowed
and passed it! It was probably 3/8” at the face and tapered
down very little from there. George told me he paid $1,500.00
for it only three days ago...before he lost it. Luckily, he
had it insured so he was going to have it replaced. We settled
up,shook hands and he abled off towards the back of the
barn....I think he was going to pressure those poor pigs into
a confession!
